Our aim is to reduce the number of tyre-related incidents on Britain’s roads by raising road user’s awareness of the importance of tyre maintenance and the dangers of illegal and poorly maintained tyres.Since our inception, TyreSafe’s activities have helped reduce the number of tyre related incidents each year and continues to contribute to a reduction in casualties on our roads.
Achieving Charity status in 2016, TyreSafe is a signatory to the European Commissions’ ‘European Road Safety Charter’ the United Nations ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’ and twice winning the prestigious ‘Prince Michael International Road Safety Award’ – most recently in 2024.
The Case for Action
Statistics to support our case for action are numerous and include;
Over 6 million tyres in the UK have illegal tread each year, which could lead to a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre and 3 penalty points. (Source: TyreSafe 2023 Tread Depth Survey)
6,316 convictions for defective tyres in 2023, with a five year average of 6,502 per year (Source: Criminal Justice System Statistics publication: Proceedings and Outcomes 2012-2023)
Over 2 million MOT failures occur each year due to tyre defects, with one million classified as dangerous. Tyres are the primary cause of MOT failures in the first seven years of a vehicle’s life. (Source: DVSA)
On average over the last five years, 152 people are killed or seriously injured in incidents related to defective tyres. Shockingly, this figure is on par with mobile phone-related incidents. The 2023 figures document a (29%) rise in KSI casualties compared to 2022 (from 147 to 190), the highest number of casualties due to tyre defects since 2018. (Source: DFT – latest figures from the Reported Road Casualties GB Report September 2024).
1 in 5 vehicle breakdowns on motorways and A roads result from tyre defects. This equates to roughly 50,000 breakdowns each year on the motorway network alone. (Source: National Highways)
Our vision
Our vision is zero harm to road users on the UK’s roads due to illegal and poorly maintained tyres. TyreSafe envisions a future where every journey is safe, and every driver is equipped with the knowledge and tools to ensure their tyres are in optimal condition.
Our mission
Our mission is to empower all road users with tyre safety knowledge to encourage a change in behaviour which in turn will reduce incidents related to illegal and poorly maintained tyres.
Vision Zero & The Safe System Approach
TyreSafe seeks to target all road users and our approach is consistent with both the internationally recognised Vision Zero strategy, whose goal is eliminating all road deaths and serious injuries and the accepted principles of the ‘Safe Systems Approach’ which focuses on designing a forgiving road system that protects road users, even when mistakes are made.
Our work
We educate and inform key target audiences, opinion formers, and policymakers on current legislation covering tyre safety, corporate responsibility, and duty of care in road safety.
Our campaigns and communications raise driver awareness of tyre safety issues and promote positive behavioural change among all road users.
Our strategy
For nearly two decades, TyreSafe has championed tyre safety awareness, consistently achieving its charitable goals of reducing tyre-related incidents. We utilise the internationally recognized “safe system” approach in all our ongoing campaigns.
To ensure the credibility of our campaign messages, we rely on data from trusted sources. This includes official datasets from government agencies like the Department for Transport (DfT), Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), National Highways, Police statistics (Stats 19), and the DVSA’s MOT data.
Furthermore, TyreSafe goes beyond existing data by collaborating with partners on unique research projects, which aim to fill crucial research gaps and develop even more effective tools for public engagement.
Our Manifesto
Our manifesto sets out some of the key changes we are campaigning for that we believe will help us achieve our Vision.
The inclusion of tyre defects as a priority offence within the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s (NPCC) Roads Policing Strategy.
The Roads Policing Strategy sets the roads policing agenda; focusing on the highest risk behaviours that lead to road users being killed or seriously injured and promotes a standardised approach to enforcement and data collection across all Police regions.
Secure agreement from the Department for Transport (DfT) for a government-funded, UK-wide THINK! Campaign focused on tyre safety.
Think campaigns are the pinnacle of road safety awareness campaigns in the UK and are specifically developed to promote positive behavioural change and encourage safe driving habits to reduce fatalities on our roads.
The creation of a National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS) scheme for those caught driving with vehicle defects.
Offender retraining schemes (like speed awareness for example) are designed to promote behavioural change through improved knowledge; a greater understanding of the risk of complacency and unintended consequence and the development of a risk reduction mind-set that reduces the chances of reoffending.
The inclusion of tyre safety within the Government’s forthcoming UK Road Safety Strategy.
Recognition of the importance tyre safety, not just as a contributing factor, but often a direct cause of incidents would significantly aid our work with delivery bodies to develop impactful interventions and reduce road casualties.
