20p coin to check your tyres tread depth

[vc_column_text]Current UK law states that tyre tread on cars must be at a minimum of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, around its entire circumference. Using a 20p coin is an easy way to check your tyre tread depth.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/9F-HmK6-s8M”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1599832094437{padding-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”601″ img_size=”full” onclick=”link_image”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″]

THE 20P TEST

[vc_column_text]Simply place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. If the outer band of the coin is visible, then your tyres may be illegal and unsafe and should be checked immediately by a qualified tyre professional.

When taking the test, remember to check at least three locations around each tyre. As the test is so quick and easy, stay safe by checking your tyres at least once a month.

A quick and easy way to see if your tyre tread exceed the minimum legal tread depth is to take the 20p test.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1596124948550{background-color: #f1f1f1 !important;}”][vc_column]

How to check tyres for MOT

[vc_column_text]Along with checking your vehicle tyre pressure, checking your tyre tread with a 20p coin ahead of your next MOT is also a great way to help ensure your vehicle will pass first time. If you can see the outer rim of the 20p when performing the test, you should replace your tyres ahead of your MOT to avoid failing. Performing an MOT tyre tread check also helps keep your overall car maintenance costs down as you can choose a garage to replace your tyres that falls within your price bracket.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]
