Case Study: NFU Mutual | TyreSafe

NFU Mutual

NFU Mutual is one of the UK’s biggest insurance companies and through its claims division sees the havoc that tyres can cause if not properly maintained.

Why did NFU Mutual get involved?

As an insurer NFU Mutual saw a rise in breakdowns and accidents involving horseboxes and trailers – a staggering 54 per cent of these were due to tyre related problems.

In response it took on the mantle to educate the owners and drivers of equine transport that checking and maintaining their tyres is integral to the safe use of their vehicles and the safe transport of their horses.

What did the NFU Mutual do?

Working with the British Horse Society it organised a series of free-to-attend safety seminars for customers and college students which were promoted with media campaigns, emails and direct contact.

Greater exposure was achieved by using TyreSafe materials including the part worn tyres DVD, 20p tread depth test, horsebox and trailer leaflets, plus part worn tyres leaflet.

NFU Mutual also enlisted the help of local riding clubs, colleges and various media outlets to help promote the campaign.

The result

More than 200 people have so far attended one of its horsebox and trailer safety seminars.

Before attending only 37 per cent said they were confident enough to check the tread, pressure and condition of their tyres. Afterwards this rose to 98 per cent of attendees.

NFU Mutual staff also benefited by meeting customers face-to-face and they themselves received a greater understanding about the importance of tyre safety.
